Early drug development Summit

SciBX is pleased to present:

Online registration is now closed. On site registration will be available on location on the day of the event

The first SciBX Innovation in Biopharma Summit will focus on Macrocycles and Constrained Peptides.

Molecules in the 500-5, 000 Da size range bridge the gap between small molecules and biologics and have recently burst onto the drug discovery stage. The hope is that these molecular entities will combine the pharmacological properties of small molecules with the specificity of biologics to open up the potential for drugging intracellular protein-protein interactions that have previously been considered undruggable.

The commercial landscape has been heating up recently, with a number of startups receiving substantial funding, and several biopharmas partnering with startups or initiating their own discovery programs in the space.

The Summit will bring together key stakeholders from academia, biotech, pharma and the investment community to sketch the landscape for these classes of compounds, identify potential challenges and opportunities — from basic research to regulatory — and draft a roadmap for innovation in the field.

This forum is intended to be the first in a series of future SciBX Summits that will feature new targets, pathways and approaches for treating disease.

SciBXThis year’s forum will take place as a session of BioPharm America 2012.

    Marijuana smoking 'permanently lowers IQ'
Teenagers who regularly smoke cannabis are putting themselves at risk of permanently damaging their intelligence, according to a landmark study.
Researchers found persistent users of the drug, who started smoking it at school, had lower IQ scores as adults.
They were also significantly more likely to have attention and memory problems in later life, than their peers who abstained.
Furthermore, those who started as teenagers and used it heavily, but quit as adults, did not regain their full mental powers, found academics at King’s College London and Duke University in the US

In the news again ... marijuana & brain damage

Parents, talk to your kids about marijuana. It is an extremely harmful, illegal drug.
Dec 16, 2013 - Research released Monday in the journal Schizophrenia Bulletin showed the brains of young heavy marijuana users were altered in sub-cortical regions — primitive structures that are part of the memory and reasoning circuits. And young people with such alterations performed worse on memory tests than non-using controls, despite the fact that the heavy users had not indulged for more than two years, on average, before the testing.
