Being able to prescribe medications both safely and effectively is an important core competency in undergraduate medical education. Additionally, doctors are required to complete ongoing CME (certified Continuing Medical Education) & training. Checks and balances are in place to ensure that doctors get good and unbiased pharmacology training - much of it from drug company representatives, but this training is constantly monitored to ensure it is not influenced by pharmaceutical companies in terms of pushing their own brands or particular drugs

If done right, it can help give dog greater sense of security in addition to other behavioral things (crates should never be used as punishment or to keep dogs in all day long while you're at work). But crates can be the dog's safe haven and comfort (dogs = den animals), theory and practice is rooted in dog behavior. But experimentation with different things should help you to hit on the right thing. For some, it ends up requiring some combination of 1) behavioral modification training (either by owner learning about the issue and trying different things, or by hiring a trainer to work with you and dog -- can be worth the money if the trainer can help you figure out how to relieve it more quickly); 2) day time dog walkers / visitors; 3) pharmacology
