Autoimmune diseases in women
Graves’s disease makes the thyroid gland overactive and causes, poor eyesight, irregular menstrual cycles, hair loss and appearance of facial hair. It is most commonly reported in women who are still in their reproductive years and have not attained menopause yet.
Lupus is one of the most common autoimmune diseases seen in women. The immune system starts destroying healthy tissue and bones resulting in swelling, inflammation, low bone density and even organ failure. Lupus can be of different types depending on the area it affects and can cause various other medical conditions as side effects.
This is a very uncomfortable and painful form of arthritis. It can also be a side effect of lupus. The immune system releases antibodies that attack cartilage and tissue between the different joints in the body.
This causes increased friction and loss of joint fluid. The symptoms of this condition include pain in the joints, inflammation, deformation of fingers and toes and reduced range of movement.
Diabetes can be of two types; diabetes type 1 and diabetes type 2. Diabetes type 1 is classified as an autoimmune disease where antibodies attack and destroy essential cells in the pancreas.
The pancreas is the organ that produces insulin. The main function of insulin is to control blood sugar. Insulin cannot be produced if the pancreas is damaged, leading to high levels of blood sugar.
